Fitness Component No. 1: Proper Nutrition

In the first installment of my fitness blog, I talked about the five components of fitness and how they impact your progression toward a fitness goal. Anyone who has the goal to change their body composition (i.e., fat-to-muscle ratio) must have a plan of action for each of the five components.

Far too many fitness enthusiasts have good intentions and a weak plan of action. I've observed this in scores of gyms throughout the last three decades that I've been involved in the fitness industry. Your average gym member will go to the gym regularly, yet has no nutrition plan to back this up. Or they eat healthy and skip workouts almost every week. Neither of these scenarios is a recipe for success, obviously.

For the next five installments of my blog, I am going to go...

So, What Happened?

Here it is August already. I know, you are reading this thinking, “Well, where have you been? Did you compete? What happened?” I did, in fact, compete. More on the results later.

I have been training… and eating… and building a house… and moving… I know, lame excuses. Some of you know that I write another blog relating to one of the other hats I wear—which is as an owner of Panaro Construction Inc. We are building our principal residence which is also our model home, the EverLife Design Home. You can check that out at http://www.delawaretoday.com/Blogs/Infusion-Design-Home/.

But that is not this column and you are here to learn about my fitness adventure.

The Year of Change

Many of us set New Year’s resolutions. Maybe yours was to quit smoking, or to lose those last 10 or 20 pounds, or to stop saying “yes” to everyone and take some time for yourself. We are usually good through part of January, then February sets in, and the commitment is getting a bit stale. By March, the honeymoon is over and the old habits have returned and there you are, promising yourself that in the spring, or maybe in the fall, or maybe next year, you will try again.

This is the year I turn 40 and I suppose this has made it more of a landmark for me. I have decided that 2010 would be the year of change for me—change on many levels. Some of the changes will be voluntary, and, undoubtedly, some will be involuntary. I, Julie Panaro, the pasty-faced,...

10 Ways to Make the Most of Your Day!

One of the most common excuses for not working out is not having time to get a workout in. Life is a workout—make the most of what you’ve got because every little bit helps! We have all heard the classic ways to squeeze in more exercise such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking farther away in the parking lots. But what else can you do when that is just not cutting it anymore? Here are 10 tips to getting the most out of your day.

1) Take it STEP by STEP. Wear a pedometer and shoot for at least 10,000 steps a day. Being able to actually see the number of steps you’ve taken and the distance that your steps equate to acts as a motivational tool and challenges you to reach and exceed your goals. Be sure to get a pedometer that measures...

The Five Components of Fitness

As a first installment to this blog series, I thought it might be a good idea to talk about the basic elements necessary to change a human form. I call these THE 5 COMPONENTS OF FITNESS.

I think it is important to understand these when you are managing your expectations regarding any fitness program. My clients’ goals range from fat loss to muscle gain and a combination of both. I also work with competitive bodybuilders and figure competitors. These people all have the same goals, but to varying degrees.

Those goals are : fat loss and/or muscle gain. Let’s face it, 99 percent of gym members are there to change the way they look. Anyone with a goal of changing their body composition will have to make these five components a part of their daily routine to be...
