Pyle in Tinseltown Let’s consider the possibility that famed illustrator Howard Pyle created the imagery that became the standard for tales like “Treasure Island” and “Robin Hood.” So influential were his paintings that the sets and costumes of many Hollywood films emulated them. See how when art historian David Lubin presents “Buried Treasure: Howard Pyle and the Silver Screen” on Nov. 17 at Delaware Art Museum. Using snippets of classic adventure films such as “The Black Pirate,” he’ll show just how big a mark Pyle made on Hollywood. Pyle it On In this year of all things Pyle—the 100th anniversary of his death—Delaware Art Museum has an extra special event on Nov. 9: the premiere of the new documentary film “Howard Pyle & the Illustrated Story.” The film traces Pyle’s work around the world and his influence on books, movies and art. Pyle, of course, is the famed illustrator of “The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood” and the main reason why the Delaware Art Museum came to exist. “The Illustrated Story” was written and directed by Wilmington filmmaker Paul Mento. Join him after the screening for a Q&A session, along with Margaretta Frederick, curator of “Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered,” which is on display now at the museum. Space...

One of Our Favorites If you haven’t made your plans yet, do so. The Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival happens Nov.  9-13. There are more than 100 American and international features, documentaries and shorts to see, including a few notable locals. Save Nov. 11 for director Michael Oates, maker of “The Storm of ’62,” and his new Delaware documentary “An Evolving Legacy: Delaware’s Coastal Act” about Russell W. Peterson’s landmark legislation to protect our precious coast line. “Legacy” is featured as part of the festival’s Regional Showcase.
