Celebrating 100 Years of Beebe

See a special centennial exhibit at the Lewes Historical Society.

A century ago, a pair of brother doctors decided little Lewes needed a hospital. “Brotherhood & Determination: 100 Years of Beebe Healthcare” tells that story for the hospital’s centennial celebration. On display at the Ellegood House on The Lewes Historical Society’s main campus through Oct. 3, it demonstrates the medical history of Lewes, both before and after Beebe Healthcare. Patrons will learn about contributing personalities, medical equipment and what it took for the Beebe brothers to begin their legacy.

Items in the exhibit, from both private collections and from Beebe, include textiles such as Richard Beebe’s WWI uniform, medical school graduation gowns, a “Gray Lady” uniform from World War II and nurses’ uniforms from throughout the years. Also included is a powder horn from 1716, used by Peter Marsh, an early physician in Lewes. According to Beebe Healthcare, the facility was founded in 1916 as a not-for-profit community medical center governed by a volunteer board of trustees. In has since has become the premier healthcare facility in Sussex County, serving a thriving beach and vacation resort area and a growing year-round population.

Beebe provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, emergency and home care in medical-surgical, obstetrics, pediatrics, oncology and critical-care medicine. Outpatient services include an Outpatient Surgical Center, Diagnostic Imaging Centers, and Rehabilitation. Beebe Healthcare serves as a teaching facility for many regional allied health and professional education programs. Admission to the exhibit is free and no reservations are required.
