Wilmington Speakeasy: A Place to Be Somebody

Converse with artists and art lovers for this quarterly event.

Calling all artists and art lovers: Look for the next Wilmington Speakeasy: A Place to be Somebody on July 12 at 314 N. Market St. Created by creative directors Jasmin Hamlin and Akin Bethea through the fledgling Atypical Society, The Wilmington Speakeasy is said to offer a high dose of creative intellect and art rawness. Each quarterly event is a different experience. The next focuses on local crime, but ends up in a happy place through song and dance. “The city lacks color, art and inspiration,” Hamlin says. Her Atypical Society is a management firm that strives to enhance exposure to non-traditional artists. Speakeasy participants include visual artists Mario Glover and Dubie Carter, poet Shaaista Clark, vocalists Simone Winder and Abe Todd, dancers Malak and Jasmine Evans and the band Positive Vibes. “Something powerful happens subconsciously to a person when witnessing storytelling through art,” Bethea says. “We’re implementing the art of positive expression.” For more information, call 415-9535 or check wilmingtonspeakeasy.eventbrite.com.
