  Beautiful Sailor by Jack Lewis

Jack Lewis was one of Delaware’s most beloved painters, beautifying the state while teaching in public schools and the Rehoboth Art League for decades. A special exhibition celebrating his career will run from July 19-Aug. 25 at the Rehoboth Art League. Selected Jack Lewis works from the state of Delaware, the league, Raubacher Gallery in Dover and the Lewis family collections will be on display. Some of the works will be available to purchase. Just days away from celebrating his 100th birthday, Lewis passed away on Aug. 19 in York, Maine, where he had moved to be near his daughter after more than 60 years in Bridgeville. Lewis came to Delaware as an artist for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s and fell in love with the area and its people. Lewis soon became well known for his paintings of local scenes. During his long career he published several books, with forewords written by notable Americans such as N.C. Wyeth and Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1982 Lewis received the Governor’s Award for the Arts. In 1986, Lewis was commissioned by Delaware’s Legislative Council to create murals celebrating the bicentennial of Delaware’s Ratification of the Constitution. The murals hang still in Legislative Hall in Dover. Gov. Jack Markell awarded the Order of the First State to him in 2010. In November 2011, Lewis, considered one of the Rehoboth Art League’s founding artists, was honored with a show at the league, titled “A Survey of Jack Lewis: From Home & Beyond.” The opening of the show will be preceded by a memorial at 4 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public. 227-8409, rehobothartleague.org
