Somerville Manning Gallery Spans Six Decades of Wyeth

Oil paintings, watercolors and mixed media art make up this fabulous exhibition.

Somerville Manning Gallery will present a solo exhibition of works by Jamie Wyeth concurrent with the artist’s major retrospective on view at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford. “Jamie Wyeth—Paintings from Six Decades” will be on view Jan. 16 through March 7, offering classic examples of the artist’s work from the 1960s through today. The exhibition consists of oil paintings, watercolors and mixed media, with a number of the paintings focusing on portraits of dogs, gulls and animals. From the “Martin Castle” birdhouse to gulls gawking at a piece of dessert in “Strawberry Shortcake,” each painting shows a variety of individual identities. One of Jamie’s most iconographic subjects is depicted in the 1969 watercolor, “Pig.” The 1980s and ’90s are represented in the show by works such as “Gulls of Monhegan #1” and “A Couple of Chairs Sitting Around the Coast of Maine,” which explore the classic Maine landscape and its inhabitants. Wyeth’s unique sense of humor is evident in his paintings of animals such as “Goose Lays Golden Egg” and “Angry Chicken, Puzzled Duck,” from the 21st century. Also, “3 is a Wedding” is a humorous twist on an arrangement of three ravens. Many newly completed paintings will be shown publicly for the first time. The Somerville Manning Gallery has a 33-year tradition of representing many of the distinguished members of the Wyeth family of artists and welcomes this opportunity to honor Jamie Wyeth. Somerville Manning Gallery is located in Breck’s Mill, off Del. 52 in Greenville.  For more, call 652-0271 or visit www.somervillemanning.com.
