Introspection: Art by Karen Berstler

New Art in Newark

It’s that time of year—The Newark Arts Alliance has announced its 2014 schedule of exhibitions, featuring art by local artists, all to be displayed in the NAA’s Terry Foreman Gallery. The first half of the year includes:

“Introspection: Art by Karen Berstler,” on view through Feb.1, displays her allegorical portraits in watercolor to provide a visual narration of what goes into shaping her subjects.

“Mad About Red” Feb. 4-March 1 is a juried, all-media exhibition of artwork inspired by or featuring the color red, in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Submission drop-off is Jan. 31-Feb. 2. The reception is Valentine’s Day.

“In the Abstract” March 4-March 29 is another juried, all-media exhibition, this one of non-representational images, including 3D work, displayed in conjunction with the University of Delaware Museums exhibition of the work of Robert Straight. Submission drop-off is Feb. 28-March 2, with a reception March 14.

The “Young at Art Show” April 1 – May 3 shows work by youth in grades K-12. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories. Submission drop-off is March 28-30. The reception is April 11.

“Spirit: Art by Debbie Hegedus & Rowena Macleod” May 6 – May 31 shows the fruit of the two artists’ collaboration. They began their art journey together over 20 years ago with a painted furniture and mural business called A Room with a View. They are award-winning mixed media artists, working in paint, clay, sculpture and collage. Their art, has been described as “surreal, political, provocative, evocative, and spiritual.” The reception is May 9.

“The Natural World” June 3-June 28 is a juried, all-media exhibition of art inspired by nature. Submission drop-off is May 30-June 1. The reception is June 13.

The annual Members’ Show July 1-July 26 is a highlight of the year. Submission drop-off is June 27-29. The reception is July 11.

The second half of the year is just as exciting. Look for more on that later.
