“Andy Warhol: Behind the Camera” is the must-see exhibit of the year. Now on display at the Old College Gallery at the University of Delaware campus in Newark, the exhibit showcases 60 of the 150 photographs gifted to the museum as part of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program.

Few people know that Warhol was an obsessive photographer because he showed his pictures only to his inner circle. According to Janis A. Tomlinson, the director of University Museums, Warhol is readily associated with silkscreened visages of celebrities, yet the silks represent “only a small part of Warhol’s prolific oeuvre.”

The show includes shots of celebrities and non-celebs. Interestingly, Warhol owned inexpensive photographic equipment. Miniature cameras or Polaroids produced much of the work.

The free exhibit will last through June 5. Guest curator Stephen Petersen will offer a gallery talk February 17.
