Why You Should See This Production of “A Christmas Carol”

Delaware Theatre Company’s show runs through Dec. 30.

Ebenezer Scrooge returns to the stage of Delaware Theatre Company in the classic “A Christmas Carol”—but with a fresh twist: seven actors play more than 20 roles. You know the tale, of course: The miser Ebenezer Scrooge sits in his counting-house on Christmas Eve while clerk Bob Cratchit shivers nearby. Scrooge’s nephew visits to invite him to his annual Christmas party, then Scrooge refuses a request for charity with a Humbug. When the old man retires at home, he is visited by the ghost of his late partner, who laments his greedy ways in life, then warns that three other spirits will visit in the night. They show Scrooge his younger, happier self; the scene at the Crachit home, where the poor family celebrates happily, despite many adversities; and the fate that may befall Scrooge if he doesn’t change his ways.

The story never fails to brighten the season, and DTC’s version may brighten it most of all. “[Director] Patrick Barlow injects a lot of humor into the piece,” writes Saratogian Theatre. “This comedy takes place because Barlow doesn’t keep strictly to the original text as he takes liberties with language, the situation and, of course, the mood of the play.”

The show will run through Dec. 30. For more, visit delawaretheatre.org.
