Serafin String Quartet Books Big-Time Fall Gigs

From Kennett Flash to World Café Live Philly, the quartet spreads its song.

The divine Serafin String Quartet is looking forward to jumping into the new season with several concerts in the area in September. The opening concert on Sept. 13 is part of the University of Delaware Gala. SSQ performs at World Cafe Live Philly for a brunch-time concert titled "Intimate Letters" on Sept. 14. Also in September, Kennett Flash presents the first of three Wednesday evening programs in a new series titled “Sip and Savor with the Serafins.” The series opens Sept. 24 with “French Connection” featuring Debussy Quartet in g minor with samples from composers Grieg and Janaček. The audience will savor the sounds of the quintessential French style of Debussy, along with a few sample sips of similar works. On Nov. 5, the quartet presents “Nordic Journey,” a behind the scenes tour of Norway’s most celebrated composer, Edvard Grieg. Distinctive Norwegian idioms accent this friendly and exciting work. The final concert on Dec. 3, “Viennese Classical Roots,” features Mozart Quartet in d minor with samples from Haydn and Beethoven. The program explores how the roots of classicism, as evident in Haydn and Mozart, may not really be so far away from the intensity and emotion more often identified with Romanticism. “Kennett Flash is a perfect venue for these more laid-back and engaging listening experiences,” says violinist, Lisa Vaupel. “Concertgoers can bring their own bottle of wine, order a bite to eat, and sip and savor some refreshment as they enjoy the music program.” There will be lots more in store for the rest of the season, including wonderful works by many, including Andrew Norman (recent Opera Philadelphia composer-in-residence) and others. Later in the season, SSQ will return to the Arts at Trinity in Wilmington for two concerts in the spring. SSQ also returns to its role as Quartet in Residence at the University of Delaware, which gives it performance and collaborative opportunities, and the chance to continue coaching the student chamber music ensembles. A new partnership at Archmere Academy in Wilmington allows it to work with eager and accomplished high school string players.
