Daring to be Different

Thank goodness someone around here doesn’t mind going out on a fashion limb.

Even if you might think that typical teenage fashion has a tendency to have the “yawn” factor, think Uggs and Abercrombie, there is hope for our young people if we can just get them to check out what Miss Melanie Kasey has to say.

You Can Never Have Too Many Purses

Grab your girlfriends, shake off the cold and get to the stores, ladies! I’m talkin’ there are some good deals out there to be had while they last!

One thing is for sure—most women get stars in their eyes when they see a sale sign.

I was at Morgan’s on Delaware Avenue in Wilmington this week and I felt like I had seen the Milky Way with all the great deals that were there to be found!

Crocheting is Not Just For Grandma Anymore!

Don’t you just love all the handmade hats that are so popular these days? You only have to walk into Lucky Jeans or Urban Outfitters to see a colorful array of knitted and crocheted goods.

The cool thing is that today’s youth is not only wearing these items, but they are taking up crocheting and knitting as a hobby and have created a cottage industry that is bursting with fresh ideas and designs.

I recently ran into sisters Amy and Angela Twerdok, who have taken Granny’s pastime of choice and are tweaking it to look modern and youthful.

Chunkin Fashion Flyin' High

One great thing about living in Delaware is that we are so central to so many cultural events. That leaves the Glam Gal plenty of opportunities to dress creatively, classically and, at times, casually festive.

To give you an example, just this week I manage to go to Philly to see the ballet, check out the Wilmington Art Loop and then drive down south to attend my first World Championship Punkin Chunkin event.

Dressing for a matinee in Philly was a no-brainer. I went for a pair of wool black pants that I tucked into my knee-high boots and added a black turtleneck with a ¾-sleeve, cropped wool, plaid jacket. For the art loop, I went a little trendier and got out my new military jacket, paired it with my black turtleneck...

A New Chic Boutique

It is hard to find a shoe store that I don't like, but the new Ashley Austin Boutique in Kennett Square has taken my fetish to a new level. Ashley Palandrani has just unveiled her lifelong dream: her own luxury shoe and accessories boutique and it's a doozy.

Ashley Austin is a little jewel of a shop that is nestled on State Street in Kennett Square next to the infamous Tallulah's Table. Ashley may be the new kid on the block in Kennett Square, but she has certainly been around fashion in the Delaware Valley for many years.

Who is the Best-Dressed in Delaware and NYC?

Bryan Abrams, Wilmington’s always-dapper ticket guru, has been consistent with his reputation around town as one very stylish guy. But now, he is proving to the world that Delaware has fashion to offer!

While attending Fashion’s Night Out in New York during Fashion Week, Bryan ended up as the main event! Dressed head to toe in vintage Versace, Bryan was brilliant with his electric pink jacket and his equally bright smile. He was spotted and photographed by an international blogger.

The Unspoken Truth about Finding Your Ideal Image

There are certain things in the fashion world that are just NOT talked about and it’s too bad, because they should be. I’m going out on a limb here, so stay with me…I’m going to bring up the topic of unwanted hair.

You know it can be a devastating problem for many women and even men.

What if you had such severe arm hair that you never wanted to show them off? What if you were a runner and had such bad chafing that it was really uncomfortable to work out? Or how about just the little things in life, like wanting to get up to go to 6 a.m. yoga and not wanting to worry about how your underarms look?

Who is the Ellie Behind Ellie?

If you were 16-year-old and a stunning blonde that just so happened to be the daughter of three generations of women’s clothing boutique owners, and you had a store named after you, there would be a lot of pressure on you to have the “fashion gene.”

Luckily for her family, Ellie Smith has got the fashion gene, big time! If things go well this summer, Ellie, a Tower Hill School student and the namesake of Greenville’s trendy women’s boutique, will be the next in line to take on a management role and keep the business in the family.

Flying in Style

Whenever I travel, particularly on a plane, I always enjoy watching people and, specifically, what are they wearing. When planning a travel outfit, you have to prepare for everything from climate change to comfort to possible loss of luggage. God forbid the airline loses your luggage and you’re stuck in the clothes on your back for a few days!

Last week, in transit to L.A., I spotted a well-dressed woman who stood out in a sea of hurried travelers. She was looking very chic and classy in a linen suite of all things! Re-Inventing Style With Smart Talk

At a recent session of the Smart Talk Series in Wilmington, I was honored to meet Karen Menke, the chairwoman of the organization. She picked me out of the crowd to compliment me on the jacket I was wearing and we struck up a conversation.

So imagine how excited I was when Karen invited me backstage to talk to the latest guest speaker, Jane Pauley. Looking stunning in a tailored white and gray suit, Ms. Pauley lectured about the importance of reinventing ourselves. In these tough economic times, she told us not to see being laid-off as a negative, but as a chance for reinvention.

Not only that, she also brought with her Sigrid Olsen, the fashion designer and artist, to share the Smart Talk stage with her. I had the honor to chat with Olsen back stage.
