Calling All Vegetarians: This Black Bean Burger Will Also Surprise Carnivores

Drip Café’s must-have burger with garlic aioli, spinach, avocado, and tastiness.

The best part of writing for Get Healthy, Delaware! is eating for Get Healthy, Delaware! It’s exciting to find new local establishments that want to keep you eating healthy and informed—it’s a whole new level of excitement when you get to see these new places in Delaware thrive and celebrate their first anniversary.

The Drip Café in Hockessin is committed to the freshest ingredients while partnering with local farms to ensure that freshness.  Every time I eat there, I have a delicious meal and I learn something new about how our food choices affect our world.

Our friends at the Drip Café have generously shared with us their Black Bean Burger recipe. They like to serve this with garlic aioli, fresh spinach, avocado, and tomato on toasted ciabatta.

Happy anniversary, Drip Café! You’re more than just healthy food for eating, you are healthy food for thought.

Black Bean Burgers

1 ½ tbsp olive oil
1 ½ cups finely chopped red onion
6 cloves garlic
2 carrots, shredded
3 tsp cumin
1 ½ coriander
3 cans black beans, rinsed and drained
3 tbsp dijon
3 tbsp soy sauce
3 tbsp ketchup
1 ½ cups rolled oats

Sauté onions and garlic until soft. Add carrots and spices. Sweat on low heat. Allow to cool. (Be sure to cook these in a fry pan and not on the grill.)

Mash beans until broken up not puréed.  Add mustard, soy ketchup and veggies and mix to combine. Stir in oats.

Form into 9 – 6 oz. burgers. Freeze on sheet tray. When fully frozen, pull out and cook.
