Bean There, Just Did That

Beans, beans. The magical fruit is so magical, it can even be turned into delicious cookies. Leave it to Milton’s own Bella’s Cookies to figure out how.

Debuting at the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market last weekend was Bella’s white bean cookie, Leguma Beach. “They took a lot of experimentation,” says Kelly Leishear, president of Bella’s. “The finished product is both delicious and healthy.” The cookies contain puréed white beans, organic oats, chopped walnut and dark chocolate chunks, all bound without eggs or better, so they’re fat free, full of fiber and packed with protein.

Delicious and healthy has been Bella’s specialty since it started a few years ago.

But Bella’s isn’t one to stop with white beans. It will soon introduce new products in its gluten-free line, including breakfast cookies (what kid wouldn’t love cookies for breakfast?), a twist on the traditional whoopee pie—an oatmeal version—and a cheesecake sweetened with agave nectar.

We’re big fans of Bella’s, having sampled most of its offerings over the years. You won’t be disappointed.

Farm Livin’ Is the Life for Me

Looking for daikon for tomorrow’s stir-fry dinner? Organic lamb to roast or stew? Fresh, local white corn?

Find it all and more at one of the beach-area farmers markets. The season began officially last weekend—the unofficial start of summer—at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, and it will crank up in earnest elsewhere over the next couple weeks.

Bethany, Fenwick, Rehoboth, Milton and, off the path a bit, Georgetown all offer weekly markets through the summer, where you can find artisan cheeses, fresh breads, vegetables of every description, delicious milk and more—including organic doggie biscuits. Extreme Type As who are thinking far enough ahead can even order a handmade Christmas wreath.

Growers and producers truck in from farms on the lower Eastern Shore to Gettysburg, but many are clustered around the beaches. Some members of LESSON, the Lower Eastern Shore Sustainable Organic Network, and others supply local restaurants that are serious about farm-to-table dining.

Even if you couldn’t care less about that kind of thing, there’s one thing for sure: fresh, organic food just plain tastes better.
