During the hustle and bustle of summer, we often forget our men and women of the emergency services. That’s why Meals For Shields is holding a summer barbecue on Sunday for first responders and their families. Enjoy a day of food, fun and fellowship—there will be face painting and a bounce house for the kids as well as games and prizes for adults. Bring your fishing rod to fish in both of the twin lakes. There will even be a chili contest, with 20 people competing for prizes and bragging rights. If you can’t break away for the event, volunteers will be on hand to deliver food to first responders' departments or stations. The goal for the event is to feed 400 or more first responders.

Meals For Shields relies heavily on food and monetary donations, and is accepting donations at the Trauma Survivors Foundation's office (2055 Limestone Road, Suite 109, Wilmington) and at the Delaware Association of Police.

Food items needed: Ground beef, boneless chicken breasts/wings/drumsticks, sausage (hot or sweet), hot dogs (all beef, pork, chicken or vegetarian) corn on the cob, baked beans, salads (potato, coleslaw, fresh green and macaroni) lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, fresh fruit (watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, oranges and honeydew) cookies, cakes or pies; condiments (ketchup, mustard, relish and mayonnaise), rolls (hamburger, hot dog and hoagie), canned soda and bottled water.

Non-food items needed: Paper products such as towels, plates, napkins, and tissues; plastic utensils, monetary donations.
