Wilmington Beer Week: Rehoboth Fourth of July Fireworks: Obie's By The Sea: Cool Spring Farmers Market

In Praise of Beer

This is the biggest news in Wilmington since the city launched its restaurant week a few years ago: Wilmington Beer Week. Beginning July 9, participating restaurants will offer special brews and events. Featured beers and ales will come from near—Delaware’s own Twin Lakes, 16 Mile, Fordham, Dogfish Head and Evolution craft breweries—and far, as well as places in between, like Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, Pa., and Flying Fish in Cherry Hill, N.J. What can you expect? Here’s a sampling of events.

Chelsea Tavern—loaded with more than 30 taps every day—will host Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione for a meet and greet on July 14, and you can sample his vaunted Midas Touch (brewed according to an ancient recipe). The event is 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. The cost is $59.

At Domaine Hudson Wine Bar & Eatery on July 12 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. meet Chuck Ott of Flying Fish to sample Farmhouse Summer, ESB Ale, Belgian Dubbel, Hopfish IPA, Extra Pale Ale and Exit 9 Strong Red Ale with specially selected cheeses, charcuterie and other foods. The event is $25. Domaine calls itself a wine bar, but with 85 brews on its regular menu, it’s a heavyweight beer bar, too.

At Union City Grille on July 10, chef Matthew Curtis has prepared a special menu for his Samuel Adams beer dinner. Enjoy Boston crab Chowdah with onion toast and Boston Lager-marinated crab followed by scallops with crispy leeks dipped in barbecue sauce or Dijon sauce. The entrée is adobo-marinated skirt steak with pickled red onion, grilled scallions and Gorgonzola polenta frites. Dessert is a Sam Stout Float with espresso bean jimmies. There is a special tasting of Samuel Adams Oaked Ale and Maple Pecan Porter.

Other restaurants will also offer special prix fixe menus. Participants include:

Fired Up

Sure, you can jostle among the other 8,000 people on the Rehoboth Boardwalk for Fourth of July fireworks, or you can find yourself a comfortable nook where you can enjoy a drink with the show. Where is that place? Obie’s by the Sea at the end of Olive Avenue. The staff will clear the tables so there’s room for all, and there’s no better seat on the beach. The evening’s drink special is to be determined, but you can stake your spot during a Budweiser sampling event from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Here’s to freedom. And don’t forget to enjoy responsibly. Take the shuttle from Route 1. For fireworks details, visit downtownrehoboth.com, or call 227-2772. To see what’s cooking at Obie’s, check obiesbythesea.com.

Cool Shopping

Beginning Thursday, Delaware will welcome another farmers market—and one you can visit after work.

Cool Spring Farmers Market comes to beautiful Cool Spring Park in Wilmington. Hours are 4 p.m.-8 p.m.

Offerings include locally grown fruits and vegetables, of course, as well as eggs, grass-fed meats, homemade pastas, cheeses, olive oil, breads, pastries and desserts. Hayley Schmittinger, of organizer West End Neighborhood House, says there will also be locally made honey, apple cider, fruit pies and prepared foods.

The Cool Spring Farmers Market is an enterprise by Bright Spot Ventures, created by West End to help young people learn business and social skills. Your shopping at the market helps.

The market will run through Sept. 15. 658-4171 x181, inwilmingtonde.com/places
