In Praise of BeerThis is the biggest news in Wilmington since the city launched its restaurant week a few years ago: Wilmington Beer Week. Beginning July 9, participating restaurants will offer special brews and events. Featured beers and ales will come from near—Delaware’s own Twin Lakes, 16 Mile, Fordham, Dogfish Head and Evolution craft breweries—and far, as well as places in between, like Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, Pa., and Flying Fish in Cherry Hill, N.J. So in January he and SoDel partner Bryony Ziegler established The Global Delaware Fund to get help to at-risk children around the world. On Friday, you can dine on their behalf. The big news this week: Capriotti’s has turned 35 years young. Astonishing. It seems like only yesterday that we started regular pilgrimages to Lois Margolet’s little shop on Union Street for a feast of Bobbie sandwiches: cranberry, stuffing, mayo and fresh-roasted turkey on a chewy sub roll. It was the fresh turkey that made us give up over-preserved, over-processed cold cut turkey breast from the deli. And—good grief—the size of any Capriotti’s sandwich: A large was long as your arm. Little Capriotti’s is all grown up now. The Union Street granddaddy spawned several local shops over the years. Then the ownership changed. It’s Restaurant Week in Rehoboth Beach, which means 20 great places have created special meals just for the occasion. Enjoy any for a fixed price of $20-$30, and without fighting the crowds that come on peak summer weekends. We couldn’t resist a bit menu grazing, so here’s an example of what you’ll find. From our Friends at Dos Locos Fajitas and Stonegrill: Start with a wedge of grilled Caesar salad, Mexican calamari with spicy tequila sauce, fresh guacamole and chips, or roasted corn-green chile bisque.
