Don't Miss the Food From Our 101 List

Our “101 Reasons to Love the First State” wouldn’t be complete without our favorite tasty treats.

If you missed “101 Reasons to Love Delaware” in the December issue, know this: Many of them involve food. Here they are:

12) Beer: We have lots and lots of it. The trend is like a return to the post-war days when every city had its own breweries, but with an essential difference: Our small towns have breweries—Twin Lakes in Greenville, 16 Mile in Georgetown, 3rd Wave in Delmar, Mispillion River in Milford, Fordham in Dover and the mighty Dogfish Head in Milton. That’s not to mention brewpubs like Argilla in Newark and the Iron Hill restaurants in Newark and Wilmington. Check them out during events such as Brews by the Bay every September and the Delaware Wine and Beer Festival every October.

19) Lima beans: As the largest supplier of lima beans in the nation, Delaware remains an agricultural leader. (And you thought farming here was all about corn and chickens…)

39) Beach-area restaurants: The scene that blossomed in Rehoboth 30 years ago has spread far and wide. Now every resort town is a great food town. And unlike 30 years ago, we have ethnic restaurants. Thai, anyone?

44) Crabs: You can have your cans of pasteurized Venezuelan and Indonesian blue crab from the grocery store. It doesn’t compare with the flavor and texture of local callinectes sapidus. With a great big bay and rivers large and small full of crabs, handlining is something everyone should teach their kids.

48) Scrapple: Non-plant foods we can properly claim as our own are limited to the aforementioned crabs, chicken and the lowly and oh-so-delicious scrapple. We don’t know where it came from or why. We know that breakfast wouldn’t be the same without it.

63) Great Pizza: Thanks to the children of the area’s original Italian immigrants, we have an appetite for pizza and countless places to satisfy it. Whether you prefer Sicilian style (hello, Café Palermo), crispy Neapolitan style (Pizza Pazza, we’re lookin’ at you), there’s a place for everyone. (Don’t ask us to weigh in on Grotto v. Nicola. You make the call.)

65) Wine: Both Nassau Valley Vineyards and Pizzadilli Vineyards are producing some very good vintages. New kid Harvest Ridge Winery is winning awards left and right. And if you’re lucky enough to live within striking distance of the Pennsylvania line, you can skip to the vineyards and wineries of the Brandywine Valley, which jump with special events all year round.

76) Ice cream: Good grief, are we ever blessed with great ice cream, from Woodside Farms Creamery in Hockessin to Hopkins Farm Creamery in Lewes. Chalk it up to lots and lots of rich cream and the creative geniuses who think up concoctions such as Better Than Sex—Duncan Hine’s devils food cake batter with African vanilla extract, Heath Bar chunks and swirls of fudge—mixed by Woodside exclusively for The Ice Cream Store in Rehoboth Beach.

78) Helen’s Sausage House: Nowhere else can you order a fried baloney and mayonnaise sandwich off the menu, then enjoy it way more than any human should in the sacredly kitschy Elvis Room.
